Safety

SAFETY REMINDER

For the safety of yourself and the other participants, baby joggers, strollers, baby carriers, baby backpacks, inline skates, motorized scooters, bicycles, skateboards, canes, crutches, walkers, walking sticks and animals of any kind are prohibited from the course. If you are seen in violation of one of these you will be removed from the course and transported to the finish line area.

Headphones are discouraged due to audio messages that are placed throughout the course to ensure your safety.

You are allowed to and even encouraged to wear a costume while running the event, however, your costume cannot include a face mask for security and safety reasons. Anyone seen in violation of this will be removed from the course. If your costume is questionable or offensive to others, we reserve the right to either have you change into something more appropriate or remove you from the event

WEATHER

The race will be held rain or shine. If there is lightning in the area the race will either have a delayed start or, depending on the intensity of the weather, be cancelled. The determination will be made by the Event Management staff.

The Walt Disney World® Resort Lightning Policy

Event operations will shut down when lightning is 10 miles out from the event areas. Event operations will not resume until the lightning is 10 miles out moving away from the event areas. Sports Manager will determine this using the *Flash to Bang Rule* and weather radar. The Sports Manager will consult with Walt Disney World® Resort Management on a course of action to utilize the operational rain plan, delay the event, or cancel the event

*Flash to Bang Rule* is applied by measuring the time (in seconds) between a visual lightning "Flash" and hearing the resulting "Bang". This time is then divided by a factor of "5" to obtain distance in miles. For example, 50 seconds between "Flash" and "Bang" divided by "5" equals 10 miles.

As a reminder, the registration fees are non-refundable.

Where to Meet on Race Day
On race morning you'll see them lined up according to their pace and holding signs with their finish times. Just fall-in with your group.

Dad honors daughter with Walt Disney World® Marathon run

"Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team."

That is how Patrick Duffey of Tampa describes his experience training for the Walt Disney World® marathon alongside his teammates who run and walk to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The camaraderie of his team, knit together by a common cause, is part of what makes his marathon run meaningful.

His daughter is the other part.

"Raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is something very close to my heart," Duffey said. "Our youngest daughter, Elli, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia when she was 19 months old. We were very blessed; after months of grueling treatment including a bone-marrow transplant from big sister Abby, and countless thoughts and prayers, Elli is now cancer-free (and has been for more than 6 years)!"

Duffey has now joined LLS' Team In Training group for a second time in order to support the research and patient services that today's patients need. "I must confess, for me there is nothing like working hard to meet a challenge for something much bigger than yourself," he said. "Yes it will be great to run a marathon but it's waaaay better to run it for something as critically important as this."

In Memory of Her Brother

Purple officially entered my life around mile 10 of the Miami ING half marathon last year. As a plain shirt runner, I just couldn't resist striking up conversation with all of the runners wearing the purple singlet race shirts of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. It was a combination of curiosity and pride that made me want to connect with everyone—I wanted to know why each of the TNTers was affiliated with TNT and I also wanted to connect with these random runners by sharing that I lost my prized brother to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Over the course of the 13 miles, I thanked countless TNT fundraisers for what they were doing and by the end of the race I had a pretty big insight. My insight was that it was time to cross the bridge from being a victim of leukemia to actually taking hold of it and embracing the loss I felt in a constructive way. After all, I thought, I am lucky enough to be healthy and fit and I could raise money too instead of being the one who simply runs by and offers thanks.

However, it wasn't exactly an easy decision to sign up with TNT. Before I made the call, I had to reconcile that I would be benefitting from sharing my brother's story. I knew that I would receive coaching and also a chance to run in a marathon that I could not otherwise afford to attend. Well, things fell into place for me when I realized that the benefits that TNT would be providing me would nourish me just enough to have the energy to do some serious fundraising in my brother's name. (And I was right.) Having a physical and emotional outlet through TNT has been extraordinarily healthy for me and has given me the physical and emotional base to be a fundraiser. I explained to one donor, "it's like I've been underwater for the last 5 years and I am finally able to come up to the surface and take a big gulp of air."

Telling people about my brother and explaining the leukemia narrative over and over has actually been liberating. I love talking about my brother—it's a way of keeping him present in my everyday life. While my brother's life was so much more than a leukemia story, he was very much about making a difference in the world. He was a selfless, kind, strong, sensitive, loving, humble, smart, handsome, fun to be around, simply awesome person who I was lucky enough to have as my brother for 31 years. He certainly would have been on board with Team if he could have beaten leukemia. In his memory, I raise money and I run. I raise money for others and I run for him. Well, I run for me too and he would be proud of that.
